entropy
ArtCN gallery has collaborated with Michel Temman, Rachid Khimoune and me, Astrid Krehan in presenting "Entropy" a group exhibition featuring beautiful photographic works and a sculpture installation by Rachid Khimoune. Each artist has made use of their unique artistic language and through different media explored the acceptance of chaos and continuous transformation of energy within the modern society of our world today. This exhibition is part of the event "Weekend of Photography" organised by PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai. For more information, please search "PHOTOFAIRS影像艺术博览会" on WeChat.
"Entropy" is a measure used to quantify chaos, disorder, randomness or unpredictability and originated from the second law of thermodynamics in physical chemistry. The law states that the total amount of chaos and disorder will naturally increase over time and energy is required to maintain or restore structure and order.
I created my new photographic series during the COVID period in response to the sudden changes and chaos that were happening around me. These experience brought to light that "the world takes on its full meaning when viewed upside down"

DISORDER is a series that describes the world’s perspective when it was hit with the unexpected unknown. It portrays the sudden blur, the disorganisation and disconnection, and the striving to handle the unknown. Over time, with the energy and the effort that has been invested to turn the unknown into a known, we are reaching a state of partially organised chaos, the current temporary ‘wait and see’ structure.

CONFUSION is a series that conveys the current chaos from the individual’s point of view. It’s how I encountered the drastic changes that happened during the first few months of 2020. The sudden impact of blurred reality, fear and confusion. It shows the journey of finding a way of coping and finally overcoming the fear, to a point that I have to remind myself that the unknown is still there. This series leads onto the third series “TRAPPED”.

The TRAPPED series reflects how I, and many people, feel. We were used to traveling freely, traveling around the world and to our loved ones. Currently, although we are fortunate and thankful for a little more normality in our daily lives, we are still trapped in a golden cage without travel. Gradually we are seeing light falling into the cage, slowly brightening up and providing the hope that the door to a two-way path will open up in the near future.
